Golf tempo is the ratio of your backswing time to your downswing time, not how fast you swing. A common full-swing reference for golf swing tempo is 3:1, where the backswing takes three times as long as the downswing. Keeping that ratio steady from shot to shot can help your contact.
What golf swing tempo means
The PGA of America’s guide to rhythm and tempo defines swing tempo as backswing time divided by downswing time. It cites the 3-to-1 ratio from John Novosel’s Tour Tempo. It also notes that golfers swinging at very different speeds can both swing 3-to-1.
That is why focusing on tempo can help. You don’t need a faster swing, only a rhythm you can repeat on every shot.
For chips, pitches and putts, Striped’s metronome uses 2:1: the backstroke takes twice as long as the forward stroke.
What is the ideal golf tempo?
There is no single ideal number. Tour players are often described near 3:1, and no study shows that the ratio causes better shots. Striped’s own tempo help puts it plainly: “Higher or lower isn’t better by itself.”
A 1997 study of tempo, rhythm and aging in golf found that backswing, downswing and follow-through timing were linked in a chain-like way, not in a fixed proportion. Its authors conclude that “changing one’s tempo may disrupt rhythm.” So the useful target is your own ratio, repeated.
Golf backswing tempo: how long it takes
TPI’s measurements of swing timing from video put tour backswings at about 847 ms and downswings at 233–296 ms. TPI does not give a sample size.
Striped’s full-swing metronome paces run from Speed (600 ms back, 200 ms down) to Silky (900 ms back, 300 ms down). Each pace keeps 3:1, so only the speed changes.
What Striped measured
One 7-iron session, timed at the hands, shows a steady backswing (one golfer, 1 session). Its three swings read 2.8, 2.9 and 3.0, with a session backswing of 0.85 s and a downswing of 0.29 s.
| Swing | Backswing | Downswing | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swing 1 | 0.84 s | 0.3 s | 2.8 |
| Swing 2 | 0.86 s | 0.29 s | 2.9 |
| Swing 3 | 0.86 s | 0.29 s | 3.0 |
| Session | 0.85 s | 0.29 s | 2.9 |
Over 11 irons practice sessions, the session average ran from 2.25 to 3.05, with a median of 2.85 (one golfer, 11 sessions). Six of the 11 sessions sat inside the app’s starter band of 2.8 to 3.2. The median spread within a session was 0.21.
Seeing the spread session by session shows you what to practice: the same ratio, day after day.
How to measure your tempo in Striped
Striped uses three devices together: your iPhone in your front pocket, AirPods, and Apple Watch on your lead wrist. Striped times your hands: Apple Watch finds the top where your hands reverse. After each swing, you hear a soft chime, then your ratio read out in your AirPods.
Setup help is on the support page, and the home page shows what else Striped measures.
Put your iPhone in your front pocket, your AirPods in, and your Apple Watch on your lead wrist. Profile Devices shows whether your Apple Watch is ready.
On Practice, pick Irons or Driver. Tap the metronome button to play your selected pace.
Tap Start session, lock the screen and hit balls. After each swing, your AirPods read out your backswing-to-downswing ratio.
Open the session report. It shows backswing time, downswing time and the ratio for every swing, plus your Variation (SD).
In Progress, compare days with the same club. Progress plots one point per club for each practice day.
In Personal targets Practice type, choose a practice. Then set the Center and Plus or minus of your tempo band. Starter targets are examples, not ideals.
Three swing tempo drills
These drills use sound first, then numbers. The free web metronome plays the app’s paces in your browser, with three tones for takeaway, top and impact.
Swing to the tones
Start on Silky with half swings. Let your hands reach the top on the second tone and the club reach the ball on the third. Move to full swings once that feels easy.
The gap between the first two tones gives your backswing a set time to fill. If you rush the top, you can hear it, and your spoken ratio confirms it.
Keep the ratio, change the speed
Hit a few balls on Silky, then a few on Tour (800 ms back, 267 ms down). The ratio stays the same; only the speed changes. In the report, check that your ratio holds as the pace gets quicker.
Move one pace at a time, since the study above warns that a tempo change can upset rhythm. For chips and putts, do the same with the Short Game and Putting paces.
Tones on, tones off
Record one session with the metronome on, then one with it off. Compare the ratio and the Variation (SD) in each report. Variation (SD) shows how much your tempo changed from swing to swing.
If the ratio holds without the tones, the rhythm is your own. That is the rhythm you take to the course.
