   Fraunces is the variable font cut down with fontTools: WONK pinned to 0 (but its swap rule lost),
   weight limited to 300..800, optical size (9..144) and SOFT (0..100) kept,
   subset to Latin plus the punctuation, arrows and math signs the pages use.
   The site's copies (scripts/yardage-sync.py) are cut again from the
   full variable fonts the app ships: WONK 0 baked into the cmap (the
   plain b d h k l v w in italic, h m n s in roman, at every size),
   SOFT pinned at 100, the weight axis cut to 300-600, and every face
   subset to the site's characters. The explorations' cut above pinned
   WONK but lost its swap rule, so until 2026-10-24 the site showed the
   wonky letters ("Striped" ended in the flagged d) and the CSS
   "WONK" 0 did nothing.
   font-optical-sizing is on by default, so large headlines get the display
